Richardson Grove State Park

A literal gateway to the Redwoods, Richardson Grove State Park is home to the first stand of ancient giants you’ll experience when traveling north on Highway 101. Trees over 300 feet tall grow right alongside the road, blocking out sunlight and sound and dwarfing the cars below. Yet the roadside grove is only a sliver of what the park offers.

Richardson Grove also includes a scenic stretch of the South Fork of the Eel River. In summer, enjoy family-friendly beaches and swimming holes, and in winter, try your hand at catch-and-release fishing for salmon or steelhead. More than nine miles of trail traverse the park, from the ADA-accessible Grove Nature Trail to more challenging Toumey Trail and Lookout Point Loop. Voted one of 100 Family Campgrounds in Reserve America's annual awards, Richardson Grove has family campgrounds and a group camp with 170 campsites in all; in summer, there are campfire programs, Junior Ranger activities, and guided nature walks.

A Visitor Center and Nature Store are located in the historic 1930s-era Richardson Grove Lodge, with a picnic area nearby.
