Black Sands Beach

One of the most accessible Lost Coast beaches, Black Sands Beach is uniquely Southern Humboldt. Secluded, rocky and dramatic, this southernmost end of the Lost Coast Trail in the King Range National Conservation Area is a spectacular spot for spying seals and sea lions, exploring tidepools, and beachcombing at low tide.

It can also be dangerous, as can the entire Lost Coast: The ocean here is too rough and cold for swimming and it’s essential to watch for sneaker waves and rising tides. Make sure to bring trail-appropriate footwear, as the black “sand” is actually made up of pebbles and stones pummeled over time by waves. But feel free to bring your (well-behaved) canine companion: both Black Sands Beach and the Lost Coast Trail allow dogs.

To find the Black Sand Beach parking lot, turn onto Beach Road from Shelter Cove Road.
