When you hit the pavement in Southern Humboldt, you might find yourself distracted from the road ahead. Runner's World Magazine calls The Avenue of the Giants Marathon, held in May, one of the most scenic courses in the country.

Staged on the old Redwood Highway in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the paved course winds beneath a towering canopy of giant old growth redwoods, following Bull Creek in one direction and the Eel River in the other. Other runs in the redwoods include Grasshopper Peak Redwoods Run in June and The Humboldt Redwoods Marathon in October.

For more info, check out Six Rivers Running Club, the Humboldt-based host of The Avenue of the Giants Marathon and Grasshopper Peak Redwoods Run.
