Freshwater & Ocean Fishing

There are few more spectacular areas to fish in California than in Southern Humboldt, where the potential catch ranges from steelhead and salmon in the scenic Eel River to albacore, rock cod, halibut, and more off the Lost Coast.

The Eel River forms the third largest watershed in California, flowing through stands of towering redwoods, including Humboldt Redwood State Park. Catch and release fishing is allowed in the South Fork and Main Stem of the Eel, with fall and winter being ideal season (after rain begins and the river rises from the long, dry summer). Visitors can also fish for Sacramento pikeminnow and lamprey, the eel-like fish after which the river is named. Anglers 16 or older must carry a valid California fishing license.

With its long stretch of undeveloped coastline, the Lost Coast boasts some of the most plentiful waters in the west. Fishing is a thriving business in the port town of Shelter Cove, where anglers can land an exceptional variety of fish, including salmon, albacore tuna, rock fish, ling cod, California and Pacific halibut, starry flounder, Petrole sole, sand dabs, and a few other Sole species too. From the shore, visitors can fish for perch or rock fish. Fishing licenses can be purchased at the Shelter Cove General Store. Sea Hawk Sport Fishing and C’Mon Sport Fishing provides the boat, gear and expertise of local waters for visitors looking for an ocean fishing adventure.
